Evolution of acoustic communication in blind cavefish

Acoustic communication allows the exchange of information within specific contexts and during specific behaviors. The blind, cave-adapted and the sighted, river-dwelling morphs of the species Astyanax mexicanus have evolved in markedly different environments. During their evolution in darkness, cavefish underwent a series of morphological, physiological and behavioral changes, allowing the study of adaptation to drastic environmental change.

Cortical mechanisms of auditory-visual interactions

The perception of the environment generally involves several sensory modalities at once, and as Rimbaud noted in the famous text of Les Correspondances, "perfumes, colors and sounds answer each other" in our brain. Thus it is easier in a noisy environment to follow one’s interlocutor if one can also read on its lips.
But if this type of phenomenon is a well-established psychological observation, the neural mechanisms that allow us to combine the information of several senses in our perception are still very poorly understood.

In an article published on May 22, 2019 by Elife, the team of Brice Bathellier , has demonstrated that in the mouse, the connections that, at the level of the cortex, bind the auditory system to the visual system act on the processing of visual information in a way that depends on the visual context.
