Throughout their life, animals learn new information and integrate it with prior knowledge. This process allows organisms to adapt their motor behavior optimally to sensory input from the environment. To support sensorimotor learning, the adult brain must undergo modifications at multiple levels and on multiple timescales. My long-term goal is to investigate directly the neuronal activity of an animal during learning of a new behavioral skill. More specifically, I am interested in how cortical motor neurons read out information from sensory areas in order to generate appropriate movements. This will be studied in a closed-loop setting in which motor cortex activity drives an external actuator, and sensory feedback about the actuator state is fed back to the brain by stimulation in primary cortical areas. In particular, we will examine the requirements in terms of spatial and temporal organization of the feedback patterns. The main hypothesis that we propose to test is whether feedback needs to follow rules of natural patterns of activity, or if the brain can learn to use any type of feedback.
