Abstract

Targeted differentiations of human pluripotent stem cells open new avenues to study the development, evolution and disease of the nervous system. Using this approach, we are deciphering the mechanisms controlling the HOX-mediated temporal specification of neuronal diversity during spinal cord development. Elucidation of these developmental principles provides strategies to engineer specific neuronal populations to approach the molecular basis of the selective resistance or vulnerability of closely related neuronal subtypes in neurodevelopmental motor neuron diseases.
