Abstract :

To survive in a complex world animals use memories of prior experience and internal states to make the most appropriate behavioural choices. A great number of studies across phyla have examined brain structures and cellular mechanisms that underlie learning and internal states changes. However little is known about how experience and states are functionally implemented within a particular neural network to guide appropriate behaviour.

In Drosophila, anatomically discrete dopaminergic neurons that innervate distinct zones of the mushroom body assign opposing valence to odours during olfactory learning. Strikingly, negatively reinforcing dopaminergic neurons also provide the inhibitory control of satiety over appetitive memory expression. Within the mushroom body, dopamine release during learning or in certain internal states alters the efficacy of connections between mushroom body neurons and mushroom body output neurons to modify fly behaviour.

I will present our recent work on the neural mechanisms driving approach and avoidance behaviour using a combination of behavioural, optogenetics and in vivo calcium imaging approaches.
